Travel theme: Benches

Ailsa’s Where’s My Backpack is one of my favourite blogs for photo challenges. Is there a bench somewhere that has called to you?

A photo posted by Meg of MegTravels immediately reminded me of one I took on Lake Como a few years ago and I dove into my iPhoto albums. Do you find there are some shots you capture that remain clearly etched in your memory? This is one for me and seemed a perfect bench for lovers and dreamers. Lake Como is a magical place … every visit there has been unforgettable.

This next shot is from Burano, the island just off Venice, known for lace-making. It’s certainly high on the list of the most colourful villages I’ve seen. This bench had me picturing early morning gossip-filled conversations in animated Italian as neighbours passed by.

Taking time to flip through my photo library is a relaxing diversion from writing but the best part of these photo challenges is popping in on other bloggers to see their work. Here are a few of my favourites this week:

  2. There’s this bench i love in Brooklyn. I know, not glamorous – but it was recently featured on Project Runway. I was all: People are sitting on my bench! It is in a little visited park that overlooks the harbor and you can see the Statue of Liberty. Great post. I love how you can write about anything.

  6. I adore benches! I always want to get them for my garden. Big ones, little ones (for faeries, of course!), in-between ones, I think they have stories to tell from those that spend time sitting on them. That bench from Lake Como… Oh, how I would love to spend an afternoon just gazing out at at that glorious scenery. Some day, I’m going to see that exact bench. What a lovely post, Patricia!

  10. Beautiful photos, Patricia. What is it about benches? There is something so whimsical about them. People come and sit, each with their different stories and personalities, and for a time become a piece of the bench’s history. If only benches could talk…

  11. I couls sit on that bench by the water and just stare for hours at that scenery. So beautiful and relaxing. We have so many in Central Park, including some hidden away in the woods that makes them so inviting.

  13. Patricia, I always enjoy your photos, but your benches are divine! My eye was especially drawn to the one in front of the blue house. I could picture myself sitting there, iPad in hand, people watching and writing…or maybe just reading on my Kindle. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Kit. There is something so inviting about a bench, so true! I wondered if the guy coming out the door was going to tell me to take a hike or ask us in for a glass of vino!

  16. These are beautiful! I so want to see Italy some day. And what it is about benches that intrigue us so? I realized in looking at these photos, that I tend to have quite a few “bench” photos, too! The one I love most I found in Bath, England. It had a small brass plaque on it that read: Ruby & George Shearn first met here ~ the dawn of their love & life together
    Best bench ever. 🙂

    1. Oh Mary, I love the story you shared about the bench in Bath (another favourite place of mine!). How very sweet! We all need to remember to honour special places and lost loved ones. We walked through a park this morning that had benches and trees all donated to the memory of someone special and the plaques were so touching. Oh … and did I have my camera or phone with me? No!!! How did that happen?

  18. I came by way of Susie! Funny how many people love benches 🙂 It’s interesting what we connect to, for one reason or another. I like benches, but I love walls. It’s kinda weird, cause they’re just benches and walls, but they make us happy.
